About Compass

Compass first debuted as a hard copy bi-monthly newsletter in October of 2009. At the time, the idea to create a newsletter for just EMHS Home Office employees was developed from employee feedback to have a forum for just Home Office employees. It quickly became a staple for Home Office news and information. However, a lot has changed for our organization since that time. For instance, we have grown from a Home Office of approximately 400 employees to more than 1,000. Throughout the system, we have also gained two new member organizations, Mercy Hospital, VNA Home Health and Hospice and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, as well as developed the EMHS Strategic Network with three participating hospitals. Therefore, we need a newsletter that can adapt to our rapidly changing times.

We took a hiatus from developing the newsletter in 2015 so that we could take a closer look at how we could better serve the needs of Home Office employees. We knew the content not only needed to be meaningful and of interest to Home Office employees, but it needed to be cost effective and distributed in a timely manner. We also gathered feedback from employees throughout the process of the kinds of elements they would like to see in the newsletter and welcome continued feedback.

As you might imagine, the new online format is more cost effective by eliminating the need to print hard copies and distribute. We have also changed the publication timeline to monthly instead of every other month, allowing for timely notification of important dates and events. In addition, one of our favorite features is that Compass can go wherever you go. You can read Compass at work, while traveling, or at your leisure while relaxing at home. Finally, it’s your newsletter and you can submit news that matters to you at any time. The “Submit Your News” button is located in the upper right hand corner navigation menu.

We hope you enjoy this issue and our many issues to come!
